Liturgy – Silence

Saturday’s in my childhood were work days – my mother’s cleaning day, my dad’s mow the lawn day. But Saturday’s now are a day of rest and because I’m not prying others out of bed, the morning invites an extended period of silence. During the week, I find myself reaching for Saturdays. But maybe the truth of it is, God is reaching for me too, eager to have a little extra time to talk about a few things that have accumulated through the week or just for my company. As C.S Lewis once wrote:

“Of Course God does not consider you hopeless. If He did, He would not be moving you to seek Him (and He obviously is)… Continue seeking Him with seriousness. Unless He wanted you, you would not be wanting Him.”

Letters of C S Lewis

Where do you find a place for silence? Where does silence find you?

Silence

A message written
in invisible ink,
sent to your heart,
to negotiate
endings,
beginnings,
and in-betweens.
A kind of augmented
communication;
entirely accessible
and inclusive.

But, you must open it,
enter. Intentionality
is needed
and a little
determination
to decipher
not orders
or rules,
but presence:
the One called
alongside to help,
yours called out
to be helpful.

Silence is the heat
that lifts the letters
and makes them visible
to your heart.
