Intermission

December 11 – yesterday it was a children’s pageant day, a long day but a good day. Let’s pause shall we in our Advent march, and just remember all those little Mary’s, Joseph’s, Shepherds, Angels, Wisemen, innkeepers, donkeys, and the leaders who guide them (yes, that is a little self serving!) who with gusto and grace have told the story. It’s still may favourite Sunday in the year. Where else can you find two angels talking casually in the front row?

Mary appeared again yesterday
in the nativity play at church –
not just mine. Maybe yours too?

It’s my favourite Sunday
and favourite way to hear the story.
A child shall lead us, model the posture,
the freedom, joyful, not burdened
with complicated histories,
or even cinematic grandeur.

It’s just some kids playing
dressed in housecoats, sheep ears,
tinsel halos, and a child actor,
a Mary, saying ‘yes, let it be…’
Yes to Jesus, as simple as that.
