Prayer for the New Year

Turning.

Let this be my New Year’s revolution
turning to what is, rather than some fantasy.
‘That’ me and ‘that’ day were just forced.
This me will have to do; today is all I have

to turn to what is, rather than some fantasy.
Justice served, mercy lavished – the humble.
This me will have to do; today is all I have.
Haven’t I been given everything already?

Justice served, mercy lavished – the humble.
God draws near to the brokenhearted
and isn’t that everything I really need?
Do not harden your heart when you hear.

God draws near to the brokenhearted.
The meek inherit, not the new and improved.
Do not harden your heart when you hear.
Blessed are those who hunger and mourn.

The meek inherit, not the new and improved.
Let this be my New Year’s revolution, turning.
Blessed are those who hunger and mourn:
‘this’ me for ‘this’ day – not forced, but freed.
